A Promise Kept by Robertson McQuilkin
is a book that celebrates the joys of married life and the
results of living by the wedding vows.
Robertson had been married to his wife Muriel for 42 years
when he wrote this book. They had six children and were missionaries
in Japan for 12 years. When they came back to the United States,
Robertson served as President of Columbia Bible College and
Seminary (now Columbia International University). After raising
her family, Muriel had her own upbeat radio show.
At 55 years of age, Muriel began to have personality changes
and problems with her memory. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's
disease. This presented a problem for Robertson, who had many
responsibilities as President of Columbia. For instance, he
traveled to many speaking engagements, and Muriel often went
with him.
Friends suggested all sorts of treatments, but they decided
to trust the Lord to work a miracle in Muriel or with Robertson.
The thought of institutionalizing his beloved wife with drugs
and restraint was not for him. When the time came, Robertson
resigned from his position and became a fulltime homemaker
and caretaker. Forty-two years before, he had promised to
love and honor Muriel in health or illness. He loved her so
much that he didn't feel he had to take care of her, instead
he felt he got to take care of her. He cherished every day
with his beloved.
As time went on, Muriel became more confused, her speech garbled
and the words turned backwards, but she always remembered
to say, "I love you." This book is a beautiful and
true love story. Muriel knew that she was loved, even when
her mind was confused about everything else. God loves us
even when we fall short.
