Drummer in the Dark is a real page-turner,
a portrait of the cut-throat world of international finance.
It also portrays the dedication of honest men and women fighting
for what they believe is right.
The plot involves a young successful businessman, Wynn Bryant,
who is naïve about politics but is pushed into being
a "fill in congressman." His brother-in-law, the
governor of Florida, appointed him to finish the term of Congressman
Hutchins, who suffered a debilitating stroke. Hutchins had
been investigating the biggest currency scam in history and
was backing legislation called "the Jubilee Amendment".
It was designed to relieve third world countries of their
staggering debt. The governor of Florida and others are determined
to quash this legislation.
Some other interesting characters are: Jackie Havilland, a
young women who is hired by Mrs. Hutchins to find out who
is trying to destroy her husband. Valerie, a very attractive
Washington lobbyist; and the day traders whose lives are caught
up by the action on the stock market floor. The settings are
Miami; Washington, D.C.; Rome; and Cairo. The story delineates
the showdown between demands of morality and the driving forces
of economic globalization.
The author, T. Davis Bunn, taught international finance in
Switzerland and served as managing director of an international
advisory group based in Dusseldorf, Germany. He is a well-known
Christian author and his books are very popular in our library.
