Vocational and Vacational Update
Within days of our last letter, I received word from
both Fuller Seminary and Westminster House
that the jobs I interviewed for had been offered to
and accepted by other candidates. Those doors
are now closed. But, as I intimated previously,
opportunities to serve in my areas of strength and
passion are abounding within InterVarsity;
namely, teaching and training InterVarsity staff.
It’s nice to be wanted!
Then, to wash the bitter gall of rejection out of my
mouth, JJ and I got to leave on the vacation of a
lifetime--a luxury Mediterranean cruise that was
given to us. We visited the New Testament sites,
Ephesus, Pergamum, Patmos, Corinth, Athens,
and Philippi. In the picture on the right, JJ and I
are in front of the ruins of the library of Celsus in
ancient Ephesus. On top of these amazing biblical
sites, we got to swim in the Aegean, visit the
idyllic island of San Torini, the ruins of ancient
Troy, and spend 2 days touring Istanbul.
We loved Istanbul and would love to go back! It is
full of fascinating history, stunning architecture,
warm people, cultural dynamism and delicious
food. Straddling two continents, the beautiful
Bosphorus, ancient Christianity and modern Islam,
this iconic polis bursts with historical and cultural
confluences. After great docent-led touring
with our group by day, JJ and I exploited the longwarm
June evenings to walk for miles until after
dark. I even looked into teaching jobs there! Nothing
yet…

The girls’ eventful summer is speedingby, much to their dismay.
Kayla:
• loved a week of family camp with my brother, Erik and his wife, Bonnie.
• two weeks of Girl Scouts day camp in the Berkeley hills parklands.
• slow days playing at home or having play dates with friends.
• has turned the corner with reading this summer--in both English and Spanish.
Stasia:
• is in her 6th and final week of intensive Latin and has done very well.
• to celebrate this accomplishment, we are taking both girls and 5 of their friends to Tahoe for a week of vacation (for them!).
• In August, Stasia goes to a week of camp with the girls from her church
