Lessons from the Third World
My men’s group is currently studying The Next Christendom: The Global Christianity by Philip Jenkins. Although the book’s focus is on the surge in the growth of Christianity in Africa, Asia and Latin America, there are some lessons I believe we can apply to our culture and how we can effectively reach out to people.
First, the gospel message has wide appeal. The gospel message resonates particularly with people in Third World countries who are poor and oppressed. In reaching others for Christ in our culture, one barrier is people’s perceived self-sufficiency and wealth. It is when people suffer a setback – financial or emotional -- and question their self-sufficiency that they may be most open to the hope which faith in Jesus Christ offers. If we take the time to develop friendships with people and let them see the hope we have, it is likely that they will turn to us for help and advice when a personal setback occurs.
Second, faith in Christ has improved the lives and status of women and improved civil rights for minorities in Third World cultures. Historically, Christians have been at the forefront of civil rights movements and are today. For our friends who are socially concerned, introducing them to volunteer activities with organizations which help minorities and poor and oppressed people is a good way to communicate our faith.
Finally, what attracts people in Third World countries is biblically-based Christianity practiced in culturally relevant ways. In our culture, we may be most effective in reaching people when we don’t compromise biblical principles but do make our worship and outreach activities relevant to the people we are trying to reach.
Outreach opportunities include:
Community Service Agency: Community Service Agency of Mountain View and Los Altos is also looking for individuals and groups of 2 to 4 people to help during the holiday season at various times. See www.csacares.org to view their schedule and sign up.
Castro School: Castro School is looking for 5th grade math tutors on Thursdays from 7:30 am. to 8:00 am.

Food for Those in Need
Do not forget about the ongoing canned food drive. Barrels for your
donations are in the entrance to the Sanctuary and in Bailey Hall.
They get emptied periodically and taken to Community Services Agency
where the food is distributed to those in need. Thank you!
